Why: The fight against cancer continues in our community and country every day. One of every four deaths will be caused by cancer this year in the United States of America. With 100 years of service, the American Cancer Society and its volunteers work tirelessly to fulfill the mission to eliminate cancer.
Successful Event History
In 1969 Mrs. James B. Gilbert, Sr hosted the first benefit for the American Cancer Society in Glynn County. Cancer had affected several members of Mrs. Gilbert’s family. She organized a fashion show luncheon at the Sea Island Club Room, which was presented by Mrs. Peggy Missildine of the Fireside Cottage. The event was well received with approximately 200 ladies attending. “Harriet’s Fashion Show,” which eventually became the Victory Gala. From this, the Victory Board was created and has since created other unique and fun events for the community to participate in to not only raise the awareness of the American Cancer Society, but to be able to give financially to help sustain the organization dedicated to eliminating cancer as a major health problem.
